Seasonal And Creative Crafts For Kids | The Blue Elephant

Seasonal Crafts for Little Artists: Celebrating the Changing Seasons

The Blue Elephant Learning Center is all about creativity for our students! Our team believes that a large amount of learning can be done through creative endeavors that are so fun they don’t even realize they are learning! What better subject to learn from than Mother Nature itself? The changing of the seasons is always a spectacular time full of transitions, beauty, and opportunity. Save these coordinating activities for a timely art project to kick off each season with your little one!

A Craft For Each Season

Creating and crafting are wonderful ways for children to learn, explore, and grow. The benefits of giving our children the freedom to embrace their inner artist include the:

  • Improved fine motor skills
  • Sensory exploration
  • Expanding Imagination
  • Exploring creativity
  • Practicing self-expression
  • Absorbing information

The following activities are a great way to allow your child to welcome each season in a memorable and educational way!

Welcome, Winter! Snowman Fingerprint Snow Globe Project

This Snowman Fingerprint Craft project is a fun way to celebrate winter while learning interesting facts! While helping your child through this project, explain how every single snowflake is unique—and so is their fingerprint!

Supplies Needed:

  • 1 colored piece of paper and 1 piece of gray paper
  • White paint
  • Glitter
  • Markers
  • Glue

Instructions:

  • Guide your child in cutting out a large circle out of the gray paper. Let them practice their circles by drawing it first or show them how to use a round object to trace a perfect circle. This circle makes up the globe portion of the snow globe.
  • Cut a base for your snow globe out of the other color of paper.
  • Let your child dip their fingers into the white paint and finger paint snow along the bottom of the circle.
  •  Show them how to stack three fingerprints to create snowmen. This is a great time to throw in the fun fact mentioned above!
  • Allow the paint to dry. Speed up the process by using a blow dryer on low heat.
  • Once dry, your child can use the markets to draw faces, arms, and accessories on their snowmen.
  • Glue the globe to the base you cut out earlier.
  • As a grand finale, spread glue around the snow globe to sprinkle glitter to look like sparkling snow falling!

Spring Is Blooming! Toilet Roll Flower Stamps

Watch your little ones blossom while working on this fun spring-themed Toilet Roll Flower Stamps project

Supplies Needed:

  • Empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls
  • Scissors
  • Paper
  • Acrylic Paints
  • Black Marker

Instructions:

  • Use the black marker to draw petals on one end of the cardboard rolls. This is a great time to let your little one experiment with different shapes and sizes—they can even try to predict what their flower will end up looking like!
  • Carefully cut out the petals—you may need to help with that part!
  • Bend each petal back approximately 90 degrees. Once you’ve cut them all out, take a moment to compare the different results of each one.
  • Dip the toilet roll flowers into paint. With different color options available, your child can get creative with combinations, noticing how different colors mix to create new ones.
  • Direct your child to press their flower onto the paper, testing out the best ways to hold them in place to transfer the paint the best.
  • Use a yellow paint to paint the center of each flower. This can be done with fingers, paintbrushes, Q-tips—anything you have on hand!
  • Let dry and display!

Sweet Summertime! DIY Glue Suncatcher Craft

Summer is so wonderful that sometimes you just want to catch the sun so you can keep a little bit with you all year long! Now you can show off the magic of summer through any season with this simple and colorful DIY Glue Snatcher project.

Supplies Needed:

  • Elmer’s White Glue
  • Food Coloring (or Liquid Watercolor Paint)
  • Toothpick
  • Flexible Plastic Lid (think Pringles-type lid)
  • Hole Punch
  • String

Instructions:

  • Pour glue into the plastic lid, covering the entire inner surface.
  • Add in approximately 3 drops of food coloring or paint
  • Swirl the colors around the glue with the toothpick. Your little one will have a blast making their own unique patterns and color combinations!
  • Here comes the hard part—the waiting! The glue needs to dry until it’s completely solid—approximately 2-3 days.
  • Once the edges begin to peel off the lid, you should be safe to peel it completely off.
  • Use your hole punch to punch a hole near the edge.
  • Insert the string and tie the ends.
  • Hang your new suncatcher in a sunny spot—maybe a kitchen window or even from an outdoor tree branch!
  • Watch as the sun shines through the suncatchers. This is a great time to point out how the material and different colors impact the way the light looks!

Finally Fall! Autumn Leaf Creativity Project

Fall is a great time to get outdoors, which is exactly what’s needed for the fall-themed Autumn Leaves project!

Supplies Needed:

  • Paper
  • Glue
  • Fall Leaves
  • Imagination

Instructions:

  • Begin this activity by going outside. Go on a nature walk and collect a variety of fall leaves in different shapes, colors, and sizes. Also grab small sticks, or twigs, and maybe a few flowers.
  • Bring your collection back home and let the wheels of imagination start to turn!
  • Use the collected items to create designs on the white paper. Encourage creativity here—the possibilities are endless! Ideas include using the treasures to create flowers, a miniature fall tree, or animals.
  • Once the design is laid out as desired, gently lift each piece to glue it to the paper.
  • Display the final product and enjoy!
