The Importance of Developmental Psychology & Holistic Learning

At The Blue Elephant, our mission is to help each and every one of our little learners blossom into the best possible version of themselves. While other private schools focus soley on academic performance, we aim to provide a stimulating environment to encourage growth and cultivate true intelligence.

To achieve this goal, we base our curriculum on scientifically-proven, time-tested principles of developmental psychology. Through our holistic approach to learning, we ensure that we not only teach kids important academic skills but also instill a genuine love for learning that they carry with them for a lifetime.

Comprehensive Learning Based on Scientifically-Proven Developmental Psychology

While other private schools may tell you otherwise, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach to learning. Every child learns in their own way. That’s why it’s important to tailor school curricula to ensure that children who learn differently have a chance to excel. In fact, a plethora of sound research has demonstrated conclusively that there are a variety of principles and practices that are effective in helping children develop healthfully, both academically and personally.

For example, the three most common types of learning styles in early childhood, identified by Concordia University-Portland, are:

  • Auditory
  • Visual
  • Kinesthetic

Less common styles of learning identified by the university include verbal, social and logical or mathematical. The university also encourages teachers to incorporate a mix of different teaching styles into their lesson plans to cover different learning styles, something we do every day here at The Blue Elephant!

Scientifically-Proven Approaches to Education

Every child learns differently, which is why we have based our curriculum on not one, but two of the most effective childhood learning curriculums ever developed: Frog Street and Handwriting Without Tears. Instead of obsessing over performance-based metrics like standardized testing and grades, our curriculum focuses on cultivating development across multiple learning domains including:

  • Language: We use both independent and teacher-generated programs to develop early literacy and pre-reading skills.
  • Social and Emotional Intelligence: Using conscious discipline, we teach life skills, such as assertiveness, positive intent, personal composure, and consequences.
  • Cognitive Development: Creativity, problem-solving and cause and effect relationships are just some of the tools employed for your child’s cognitive development.
  • Physical Health: We provide age-appropriate outdoor equipment to encourage physical activity and promote physical development.

Our approach provides a strong, wide-ranging foundation for a lifetime of learning. Not only is it more effective in helping children develop the skills to excel in school, but it instills a genuine love for learning and allows children to develop the other, non-academic skills vital for success in every arena of life. Oh, and we’d be remiss not to mention – it makes for a much more enjoyable learning environment, as well!
